Dear Reader,
It is important to hold on to certain things that once formed our identity – only healthy things. Because they open our eyes to how far we’ve come, and how grateful we should be for everything that came our way, and even the things that we once felt skipped us.
The Mirror
A former senior colleague found a copy of my first CV and she sent me pictures. I looked at one part and closed my eyes. Once I became courageous, I went through it in detail.
For some reason, I’d written #GSM in front of my mobile number. If I saw a CV with that today, I’d think the person was archaic.
On my profile, I’d written, “Clearly, I am reliable, group propelled and self-driven.” Clearly? Based on what evidence? What’s group propelled?
Education. I can’t believe I’ve evolved from all that stress about grades. Looking at the sections about my projects fills me with nostalgia, erasing all the sleepless nights and anxious days. I loved research.
The ‘My Skills’ section looks so basic and forced.
I even had an ‘Interests’ section. I’ll reproduce them below because I’m only 55% embarrassed:
Reading: I am an avid reader of books. Reading makes me more open-minded about the world and improves my vocabulary and creativity.
Writing: I have found that it really helps me to organise my thoughts and it enhances my creativity and the way I think. I would love to write and publish a novel in the nearest future.
I’m glad she sent me the CV, it reminded me that despite feeling like things haven’t changed, they really have, that progress doesn’t always look or feel like we assume it does.
The Lens
Can I call myself a filmmaker after this? Probably not, probably not. Maybe I’ll be on the Cannes Film Festival’s red carpet someday, not to show off my clothes of course, but you have to cross the carpet to get to the screenings (apparently). #nogrowthwithoutlookingsilly
The Grounding
It could be your CV, or something else, have a look at something that describes who you were in the past, and compare to your present. Don’t judge yourself, be grateful for your growth. At least you didn’t write #GSM in your first CV.
Is there something you’ve always wanted to do but feared looking silly (like the ‘short film’ above), do it.
The Spring Fund
Investing mistakes I made that you shouldn’t:
Investing because a YouTube channel recommends a stock.
Investing because the stock is rapidly increasing – find out why it’s happening before investing, it could tank seconds after you buy it.
Due diligence saves you from the emotional stress. For example, if you’d done your research, you’d probably not buy stocks from a company being run by Dr. Evil’s disciple.
Investing after reading one article. One is not enough to educate you.
The Shelf
The Poem, The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost.
“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth…”
