Thank you for being a friend, travelled down the road and back again, your heart is true, you’re a pal and a confidant…
I found out about The Golden Girls on an episode of The OC; two characters shed their mutual hostility when they discovered a shared love for the show.
Four women, all above 50 (regardless of what Blanche believed), educating us about life’s unpredictability. We plan our lives, and envision our retirement years, and then…death happens, divorce happens.
It feels like Rose, Blanche, Sophia and Dorothy, have always been a part of my life.
Rose: She married the love of her life, had children, all the while assuming that Charlie would always be there to cater for her. Then, he dies.
Blanche: The eternal belle of the ball, adored and sought by many, finally commits to George, and they build a wonderful life together. Then, he dies.
Sophia: She immigrated, started a new life, built a family – checked all the boxes. Then, Salvatore, her husband dies, and she ends up in a home for the elderly.
Dorothy: A brilliant woman that could have been anything if it wasn’t for the error of marrying the wrong man. Still, she persevered and committed to being a doting wife and mother. Then, he dumps her.
‘The destination,’ that elusive definition that we all have about the perfect life simply doesn’t exist. The world isn’t a terrible place, but happily ever after is simply unrealistic.
What is realistic, is the determination shown in The Golden Girls’ themes: don’t give up, keep striving, and you might make some wonderful friends along the way.
Another lesson I learnt from The Golden Girls were the striking character contradictions, and how we’re all so much more than what we look, or sound like at a surface level,
Rose, naïve and dumb Rose, who could outsmart others in her own unique and lovable ways.
Blanche’s vanity might scream insecurity, but I saw her as the most confident of the bunch. Damn the rumours! Blanche Devereaux is a lady.
Dorothy, the smart one but the one that craved companionship the most. She probably never forgave herself for shelving her ambitions for Stan. So brilliant, and yet, she harboured a lot of resentment and insecurities.
Sophia. I LOVE Sophia, the smallest of the bunch, but the one with the biggest heart, always ready to lend her support to her family, friends and even strangers. Sure, she might insult them until their eyes turn into pools - but it’s all love.
Thank you Golden Girls, for teaching me to embrace every unexpected twist, with love, friendship – and a laugh.
